The categories for 2012

The four categories for the 2012 edition of Pride Photo Award were:

Chameleons/Double Life – 2012 theme category

‘Chameleons/Double Life’ is the opposite of the 2011 theme ‘Straight Back at You’. Last year’s theme was about society’s reactions to people who are ‘different’, the 2012 theme was about the ways that people adapt to their surroundings and to the gender norms and the heterosexual norm. Pride Photo Award was looking for photographs about the choices people make to adapt or not to adapt – the conformists and the non-conformists, people living on the edge and the extremes – people with alter egos or double lives, either hidden or in the open.

This was a broad thematic category for photos that show people with a gender identity that is different from the male/female gender stereotypes. We were looking for images showing that gender is not binary (man/woman) but a continuum with countless variations. Everyone has male and female sides to their personality. This category covered the spectrum of sexual identities and people who have both male and female physical characteristics.

This was a broad category for photos that documented an aspect of sexual and gender diversity.  Documentary photography included news photography and current topics that were in the news between January 1st, 2010 and June 30th, 2012.

Open Category

Photos about sexual and gender diversity that did not fit in any of the above categories could be entered in this category.
