2014 Theme: Getting Closer

“If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.” This famous quote by Robert Capa, legendary photographer and founder of Magnum, inspired the theme of the 2014 edition of Pride Photo Award.

The theme Getting Closer can be interpreted in many ways, with getting close to the subject of your photographs being one. Getting closer is not always easy and not always safe but it is enlightening and rewarding.

Closeness furthers understanding, just as distance fuels ignorance and bias. In this way, the theme can also signify getting closer to the goal of furthering acceptance of LGBT people. The images may show how perceptions change when the distance between people is eliminated.

We hope the theme will also inspire images that capture unique moments of intimacy between partners who grow closer during their relationship, between friends, or between communities.

In addition to the annual theme category, which this year is Getting Closer, the 2014 contest will feature three permanent categories – Documentary, Gender and the Open category.

Participants can register and submit their photos for the contest from April to June 2014. The exact dates will be announced in March or April.

A jury of internationally renowned photography experts will judge the entries and select the winners, who will be announced mid-July. Stay tuned for upcoming news about the jury and the contest dates!
