Pride Photo Award 2012 big success

Over 200 photographers submitted around 1.750 photos for the 2012 Pride Photo Award contest that ended on Saturday the 7th of July. This means an increase of 25% (350 photos) compared to last year’s edition. Needless to say, we are very pleased with this result.

Once again we received entries from all over the world. We reached our goal to increase the international entries in comparison to the Dutch entries. Last year two third (67%) of all entrants live outside The Netherlands,  this year three quarters (74%) of all participants are from abroad. The map shows an overview of the different countries photographers submitted from.

We saw a rise especially in entries from all over Europe and from Asia. The biggest increase in entries was from the USA. This is not surprising, seeing as the languages in which we communicate are currently limited to English and Dutch. For future editions we hope to increase the number of languages in which we approach photographers to enter the contest.

So how does a photographer in China find out about Pride Photo Award? And how did a photographer in Kenya find out about the contest?

One of the main goals of Pride Photo Award is to reach as many photographers as possible on an international level. To accomplish this goal, we start preparing long before the submission begins.

The first step in this process is to search online for relevant photo series on the topic of sexual and gender diversity. We contact these photographers and inform them of the option to enter the contest.

Secondly, we search for organisations such as photo magazines, academies, photographers unions that we ask to spread the Call for Entries.

One thing is for sure: Pride Photo Award’s network is steadily growing bigger on an international level.

We are currently preparing the entries for the jury. The international jury will judge the entries next week, from Monday the 16th until Wednesday the 18thof July.  We will announce the winners on the 19th. Keep an eye out for this website, our Facebook page and Twitter so you will be the first to know!
