The categories for 2011

The six categories for the 2011 edition of Pride Photo Award are:

Straight Back At You

‘Straight back at you’ is the thematic category for 2011. We are looking for pictures that show the way the outside world reacts to people who are (visibly) different from the gender and sexual stereotypes. These reactions can be both positive and negative: from Gay-Straight Alliances to anti-LGBT rights activists, from ‘fag hags’ to transphobia. We have chosen this theme because tolerance for minorities is on the decline in many countries, resulting in support and repression or even violence on both the political level and in daily life. This affects both LGBT people and heterosexual people who do not dress or act according to gender stereotypes. This category is not for photos about people who do not conform to sexual or gender stereotypes, but for photos that show how the outside world reacts to them.

Sports

In the sports world masculinity is usually the norm. For this category we are looking for pictures that show how people in the sports world who do not conform to the sexual and gender stereotypes deal with this. We have chosen Sports as one of the categories for the 2011 edition in view of the Eighth Gay Games that were held in Cologne, Germany in August 2010.

Gender

This is a broad thematic category for photos that show people with a gender identity that is different from the male/female gender stereotypes. We are looking for images showing that gender is not binary (man/woman) but a continuum with countless variations. Everyone has male and female sides to their personality. This category covers the spectrum of sexual identities and people who have both male and female physical characteristics.

Current Topics

This category focuses on topics concerning sexual and gender diversity that have been in the news between January 1st, 2009 and June 30th, 2011. Photos need not have been published.

Documentary

This is a broad category for photos that document an aspect of sexual and gender diversity.  Documentary photography may overlap with current topics. The entrant may select to enter a documentary photo or series in one of these two categories.

Open Category

Photos about sexual and gender diversity that do not fit in any of the above categories may be entered in this category.

Some photos will fit in more than of the above categories. Please refer the Contest Rules if you wish to enter a photo in more than one category.
