About Pride Photo Award

Pride Photo Award is an annual international photo contest for photos about sexual and gender diversity. The photos we look for show one of two things:

  • Gender is not a binary concept: male/female. There are as many variations of gender as there are people
  • The diversity of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community, as opposed to the stereotypes usually shown in the media

Pride Photo Award brings together a selection of top quality photography. It offers photographers a platform to show their own definitions of sexuality and gender. It furthers acceptance of sexuality and gender diversity.

The first edition of Pride Photo Award opened in Amsterdam in February 2010. The exhibition featured photos that were selected from earlier projects and showed a broad spectrum of LGBT diversity. You can see the photos from the 2010 exhibition elsewhere on our website.

The first contest started on April 1st 2011 and ended on June 30th. A jury of internationally renowned experts on photography has selected the winning photographs in each of the six categories and has selected the best overall picture, which was awarded the Pride Photo Award 2011. Visitors of the exhibition can vote for the Audience Award. The winning photographs were exhibited in Amsterdam from September 3rd until October 2nd 2011. You can visit a 360-degree representation of the exhibition.

We reach out with these images to the rest of the world through travelling exhibitions, the internet and the media. A selection of the winning photographs are being shown on seven squares throughout Amsterdam. Teenagers will interview passers-by about the photos on film. These films are used to initiate local debates with groups that are hesitant to accept sexual (LGBT) and gender diversity. The exhibition will travel to the home countries of the winning photographers. From 2012 onward, it will also travel to other cities in The Netherlands.
